Marielle Gonier defends art that challenges perceptions and convictions, and I recommend that anyone who wants to experience art as close as possible to feelings, emotions and that part of fragility buried in us that we don't often let live, to see the film Performing land, and to be in the presence of Marielle, in the same place, here, elsewhere, even if you are far away and it's through a screen. Newly arrived in Sydney, Marielle is a performance artist with a CV rich in artistic experiences, making her the perfect choice for our September theme. Her award-winning film “Performing land” forms the basis of our evening. "The screening of her movie on the night of the Philo Bistro certainly moved people
who came to meet her and discover her art. In the words of a director of the Alliance Française
afterwards, it was “a very moving, emotional evening”. Everyone in the public was thrilled by both
the movie and the warm personality of Marielle Gonier.The movie (...) prompt reconsideration of binary attitudes which perpetuate the harsh dichotomy between the human and non-human. The work emphasises the unifying nature of ecological processes through the defamiliarization of human biology and the personification of
natural element. (...) This synthesis of artistic and philosophical approaches embraces an amorphous, transcendent state of being.
(...) All combined to create a superb and superior emotion. It is a disturbing, emotional, suspenseful film with a real narrative arc. This film has moved the audience a lot. "

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING⁠
After an initiation to classical dance and a solid musical training at the conservatory (piano studies) Marielle left her native island , Martinique, for the United States to complete her artistic training.⁠
In New York, she continued her studies in classical dance at the Russian Ballet School and on Broadway, honing her skills in contemporary dance, modern-jazz and afro-jazz.⁠

In Paris, she continued her career at the Jennifer Goubé Ballet School and at the International Dance Academy: classical dance, contemporary and modern dances, theater, singing.⁠

She also obtained a Master I in Performing Arts at the University of Paris VIII.⁠

Marielle is currently the founder of Un jour / Une performance, where she devotes herself to multidisciplinary artistic creations and performances, and artwork in collaboration.⁠

" Dancer in the house! Meet the new artist-in-residence, Marielle Gonier!
She is a professional dancer and choreographer from Martinique, French Antilles. Before moving to Paris to continue her career, Marielle completed her artistic training in classical and contemporary dance in New York. In search of non-formatted writing, she creates her pieces on a singular vision where arts, movements, and emotions are mixed; where the starting point is the body-interiority relation towards universal language. She is also the founder of "Un jour/Une performance", where she is dedicated to creating artistic happenings, dance, and artistic creation in the living arts.
Currently, we are working with @mariellemadly to develop her research on the association between land art with living art by considering the human body as a material, which is also derived from nature. This research is a sensorial experience for her, where the art of exploring is equally important as the performance itself, if not more.
"When we work in the heart of nature, it gives us no other choice than to listen to it and respect it. It has the possibility to reduce our body as in the tiny dust particle. This power gives it an almost divine dimension. It is as intriguing as it is uncertain.", said Marielle to explain her initial thoughts when she started work on this project.
